Fructose malabsorption occurs when your small intestine has difficulty absorbing fructose, leading to it passing into the large intestine where bacteria ferment it. This fermentation process is what causes most of the uncomfortable symptoms.

Common symptoms of fructose malabsorption include:

  1. Abdominal Pain/Cramping: Often described as a dull ache or sharp pains in the stomach area.
  2. Bloating: A feeling of fullness or swelling in the abdomen.
  3. Gas (Flatulence): Increased production of gas, which can be frequent and sometimes foul-smelling.
  4. Diarrhea: Loose, watery stools, often occurring shortly after consuming fructose-rich foods.
  5. Constipation: Less common than diarrhea, but some individuals may experience alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea.
  6. Nausea: A feeling of sickness or an urge to vomit.
  7. Gurgling Stomach (Borborygmi): Audible rumbling or growling sounds from the intestines.
  8. Fatigue: Chronic digestive issues can lead to general tiredness and lack of energy.
  9. Brain Fog: Some individuals report difficulty concentrating or a general feeling of mental fogginess.

These symptoms can vary in severity and may be triggered by different amounts of fructose depending on the individual. It’s important to note that these symptoms can also overlap with other digestive conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), so a proper diagnosis from a healthcare professional is crucial.
